Åseral is an inland municipality located in central Agder. By car, it is one and a half hours to Kristiansand and Mandal, two hours to Arendal and Flekkefjord and three hours to Stavanger. Åseral may be a small municipality in terms of population with around 900 inhabitants, but we have an area of 888km2 available to us.

EMPLOYMENT
People are employed within electricity generation, contracting/construction businesses, plumbing and electrical businesses, agriculture and forestry, small businesses, arts and crafts, tourism, the service sector and the municipal authority, etc.In recent years, the municipality of Åseral has experienced a sharp increase in the number of holiday cabins. The municipality has an excellent support scheme for entrepreneurs looking to start up a business and for agricultural and forestry enterprises.
 
ACCOMMODATION
The municipal authority's target is for there to always be housing plots available. There are three municipal housing estates with low plot prices in various locations. Currently there are plots vacant at Kyrkjebygda, Lognavatn and Kylland. There are also plots vacant on private housing estates in Eikerapen. A new area of plots is also being planned at Ljosland. Åseral municipal authority is offering NOK 100,000 in grants for the construction of housing within regulated municipal housing estates and NOK 300,000 for housing outside regulated areas. NURSERIES
Åseral nursery is a full-time nursery for children aged 0-6 with three sections. The application deadline for the main intake is 1 March every year. Nursery places are available to everyone who wants them.
 
SCHOOLS

UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION
The municipality of Åseral works with neighbouring municipalities to provide broad and appropriate study programmes within upper secondary education. Daily transport is provided from Kyrkjebygda. The municipal authority provides scholarships for a period of three years for education beyond primary and lower secondary levels. This year, there is an allowance of NOK 10,000 for students living away from home and an allowance of NOK 5,000 for students living at home.

ADULT EDUCATION
Adult education is offered to all immigrants and people who have not completed primary and lower secondary education.
 
HEALTHCARE
The municipal doctor's surgery with an ambulance and accident and emergency facility is located in the health centre building in Kyrkjebygda. We have two doctors. The health centre is also located here and is staffed by health visitors and a midwife. Elsewhere in Kyrkjebygda, there is a physiotherapist who has a clinic at Åseralsheimen and a dental clinic located at the school.
 
Eikerapen Roots FestivalCULTURE
In the community centre, there is an indoor sports hall, library, mini shooting range, music room, youth community centre and recreational hall, as well as various rooms for clubs and associations. The swimming pool, which is also located here, has been recently refurbished. The pool is open every week for family sessions. The "Minne" culture centre have exhibitions on local culture and history, as well as a regional archaeological exhibition.
The municipality has an agreement with Bygdekinoen ('the Rural Cinema') regarding the showing of films every other week in the newly refurbished cinema hall. Every year for three weeks in July an exhibition of rural life is held. This involves the display and sale of art and craft items produced by both professionals and amateurs. A number of concerts are also held throughout the year. If you would you like more concerts, then perhaps the Eikerapen Roots Festival may be an option. This festival is held every year over five days at the beginning of August. You will find an abundance of concerts here.

 

The mountain, Slettefejell

LEISURE
The municipality of Åseral has large mountain plateaus with many opportunities for outdoor and leisure activities. Fishing permits are sold for certain parts of the municipality. We have both summer and winter walking trails. We also have three alpine skiing centres. You will find these in Bortelid, Eikerapen and at Ljosland. We have lit trails in Kyrkjebygda and various other prepared ski trails throughout the municipality. There are also a number of clubs and associations for people looking for a more organised programme.
The following are some of the clubs and associations that are open to everyone:Children's association, children's meet-ups, Sunday school, juniors, teenage club, school club, youth group, youth club, children's choir, music choir, home crafts club, farmers' club, forest owners' club, rural women's club, sports club, shooting club, historical club, medical association and mental health group, etc.Bortelid, Eikerapen and Ljosland are hives of activity at the 
moment. 

 

Many holiday cabin areas are under construction. More and more people are choosing Åseral to be "the municipality for their second home". Perhaps you would rather have Åseral as the municipality for your main home?
 
FAMILY LIFE
Åseral offers an excellent, safe environment in which to bring up children and young people, as it does in fact for people of all ages. In addition, you don't need to worry about old age because we have very well developed systems for the provision of care for the elderly. We may not have the variety of services and attractions offered by the big towns and cities, but we do have offer a beautiful landscape for you to explore free of charge. A recent survey of the area indicated that people are very happy with the services that we provide. Indeed, the residents of Åseral are much happier than people elsewhere in the county and across the country as a whole.
